Via Ferrata - The Iron Way**ViaFerrata1
A via ferrata (Italian for "iron road") is a mountain route which is equipped with fixed cables, stemples, ladders, and bridges.
The use of these allows otherwise isolated routes to be joined to create longer routes which are accessible to people with a wide range of climbing abilities. Walkers and climbers can follow via ferratas without needing to use their own ropes and belays, and without the risks associated with unprotected scrambling and climbing.
They are found in a number of European countries, including Italy, Germany, England, France, Austria, Slovenia, Romania, Switzerland, Spain, Sweden, Norway, and Poland.
The first via ferratas were built in the Dolomite mountain region of Italy during the First World War, to aid the movement of mountain infantry.
The world's highest via ferrata, at 3,800 metres, is located at Mount Kinabalu in the state of Sabah, Malaysia.

12 Stage Zip Line / Canopy Tour**

The terms zip lines (wires) and canopy tour are heard and seen a lot these days. The Canopy Tour is modeled after canopy tours found throughout Central America and the Caribbean. While there is a certain level of thrill involved, the 4-hour experience is designed to give participants ample exposure to the natural features.

You will be properly fitted with a seat and chest harness and a helmet. Your safety gear will also include a double pulley trolley system for the zip lines and a Y-lanyard system for the platforms and bridges. The first stage of the experience is a one-mile ride with spectacular views throughout the journey. We will gain just over 600 feet in elevation by the time we reach the starting point of the Canopy Tour.

The tour starts with a short hike to the practice zip line. Here we will demonstrate how to properly zip, brake and, should the situation warrant, how to properly rescue yourself along a zip line.

What should you anticipate as you approach the first zip line? You will be standing on a platform just a couple feet above the ground; however, off to your left, the hillside drops away very steeply as you prepare to zip across the upper portion of a natural bowl. While you are starting near the ground you will be nearly 30 feet in the air as you ride over the middle of the bowl and approach the second platform on the other side.

The zip lines get progressively longer and higher as you “switchback” your way down the upper bowl. At each platform you will have ample opportunity to catch your breath and enjoy the spectacular views of the valley. Guides will point out significant natural features unique to each platform and will try to answer any questions you might have concerning your surroundings.

12 zip lines
3 sky bridges
40 foot rappel
Nearly a mile of zip lines from 150 – 680 feet in length
Heights up to 80 feet above the forest floor
70 – 250 pounds weight requirement

Rafting of the Class 5 Upper Gauley

Wild and Wonderful
The 25 miles of free-flowing Gauley River and the six miles of the Meadow River pass through scenic gorges and valleys containing a wide variety of natural and cultural features. The Gauley River contains several class V+ rapids, making it one of the most adventurous white water boating rivers in the east.

The Gauley River National Recreation Area is managed by New River Gorge National River. For more information about National Park Service lands and facilities in the area, visit the New River Gorge National River web site.

Gauley River Whitewater
Dropping more than 668 feet through 28 miles of rugged terrain, the Gauley River's complex stretch of whitewater features more than 100 rapids with a steep gradient, technical runs, an incredible volume of water and huge waves. Its vigorous rapids, scenic quality and inaccessibility combine to make Gauley River one of the premier whitewater runs in the world.

Comments & Feedback

Just wanted to let you know I had an AMAZING time at the Gauley trip!  Zip lining was great, although I dont think I ever want to walk over a sky bridge again!  LOL  The rafting was awesome.  If you have facebook, add me and you'll be able to see the video I purchased uploaded there tomorrow most likely.
Thank you for putting together such a great trip!  I hope you do it every year because this is something I would continue to do!  I'm actually hoping to plan an outing myself at those cabins we stayed at on Saturday.
Thank you again, and hope to see you soon.

Igor,  GREAT job leading us over the weekend ;)
Simon and I had a great time and it is definitely an experience to remember.  We hope to see you soon, if not doing yoga in the Gunks, maybe a bike ride in Croatia?
